This is a super fast and easy marble cake recipe to make at home. Dust the cooled cake with icing sugar and enjoy with a cuppa.

- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 100g icing sugar
- 100g butter
- 2 eggs, separated
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- 1 tablespoon cocoa powder

- Preheat the oven to 180 C / Gas 4.
- Sieve flour and baking powder together thrice.
- Beat icing sugar and butter till light and fluffy. Add egg yolks and vanilla and beat till smooth.
- Beat the egg whites with a clean whisk, then add to the butter mixture. Gently fold in the sieved flour and baking powder.
- Separate half of the mixture, placing in another bowl. Add the cocoa to one mixture, folding in till well incorporated.
- Grease a sandwich tin with butter and dust with flour. Add the vanilla cake mixture, then the cocoa mixture. Use a knife and swirl it through the mixtures to create a marbled effect.
- Bake cake for 20 minutes, or till a skewer inserted in the centre comes out clean.

Ingredients of Marble Cake
- 200 gm sugar
- 250 gm all purpose flour
- salt as required
- 2 drops vanilla essence
- 5 egg
- 5 tablespoon milk
- 2 teaspoon baking powder
- 50 gm cocoa powder
- 200 gm butter
How to make Marble Cake
Step 1 Whisk the eggs and mix with butter
Powder the sugar and mix it with butter. Now beat it along with the butter till it is light and fluffy. You can use a hand blender or a whisker for best results. Now add the eggs and beat vigorously till stiff peaks are formed.
Step 2 Prepare the batter
Now in another bowl, sift together salt, baking powder and flour. This process is important as it enables thorough mixing of baking powder in the flour. Gradually add the flour spoon by spoon to the egg, sugar, butter mixture. Mix well so that no lumps are formed. Add the vanilla essence and mix well. At this point you can add milk if you feel the batter is too stiff.
Step 3 Divide the batter in two portions
Divide cake batter into 2 portions. In one portion add cocoa powder and mix. Leave the other portion plain. Take a baking dish and line it with butter paper. Grease the paper with some oil and dust some flour.
Step 4 Mix half the batter with cocoa powder
Pour the plain batter first. Now slowly pour the batter with cocoa. Take a small tooth pick and make geometrical pattern by swirling in between the batters.
Step 5 Pour in both the batters carefully
Do not stir, swirl or shake the pan. Or the geometric pattern that you have made will vanish. You have to handle the pan very carefully at this point if you want to have that marble effect.
Step 6 Bake and relish!
Bake the cake in a pre-heated 180 C oven for 60 mins. The temperature depends upon your oven. You can bake it longer or in less time too. Just insert a skewer and check. If it comes out clean, your cake is done. Allow the cake to cool on a wire rack for half an hour. When you will cut the cake, you will see the two colours! Slice it and serve with a hot cup of tea or coffee. You can also add icing to the cake or serve it with fresh fruits and berries.
What is marble cake?
Ultimately, marble cakes are butter cakes at heart. So you can expect nothing short of a soft, moist, tender-textured cake, with a light, pure, buttery flavour.
Now , it’s usual to think that these cakes are always made with chocolate and vanilla flavoured batters.
But by definition, they are typically batter cakes made with any mix and number of different coloured batters.
A marble cake is visually beautiful because it involves marbling a light-coloured batter with a darker-coloured one for contrast.
The batters can be flavoured with different kinds of fruit or fruit pastes, or blended with cocoa, coffee and even flavoured liquors.

Even when I was working long hours hosting and working on the Jenny Jones Show, I still made time to cook my own healthy meals. These days, I feel extremely fortunate that I can spend all my time doing what I love. I created Jenny Can Cook as a place to share my own healthy recipes with everyone from experienced cooks to novices in the kitchen. My healthy lifestyle is what motivates me to create healthy and easy recipes and especially healthy dessert recipes because I do love my sweets.
I’m not a health food nut – I’m just doing the best I can to create clean recipes that I feel good about eating. But they have to taste great so I basically work on reducing the bad stuff and increasing the good stuff. For example, with dinner recipes, I focus on using healthy fats and incorporating lots of vegetables. My best desserts usually have less sugar than most and added fiber where it works. Most of my cookies are made with whole grains and I often replace chocolate chips with dark chocolate chunks.
Keeping it simple is also important. Any time I can make something easier to cook, I do it. So you’ll see lots of easy recipes here where everything goes into one bowl or one pan, like my most popular lemon brownies or easy homemade granola. And I’m always working on creating simple recipes that have just a few ingredients. When I can make a simple, easy recipe it’s usually the one people use the most, like my quick and easy mac & cheese or salmon patties. It’s all about clean eating.
I especially love to bake so it’s really important to have healthy dessert recipes because I enjoy something sweet after every meal and it’s always homemade… from my hugely popular quick & easy chocolate cake to my homemade cinnamon rolls that everyone seems to love, and both recipes are made with no butter. For anyone wanting to avoid butter, you will find a lot of delicious healthy desserts with no butter including cakes, pies, and cookies without butter. I am also a student of nutrition and I know how crucial it is to eat vegetables every day. They are the lifelines to good health and many of my dinner recipes have vegetables built in, like my one pot chicken veggie pasta loaded with high antioxidant vegetables and my pork tenderloin with roasted vegetables. These are both super healthy meals with the anti-aging benefits of a variety of vegetables.
My own favorite meals have to be Polish food. That’s my heritage and I grew up on Polish Cabbage Rolls (Gołąbki) and Pierogi. My sister and I learned to cook from our dad and we even had our own traditional Polish costumes. People seem to enjoy my Polish family recipes and I am always working on the next Polish meal to post but it has to be the healthiest I can make it. I am surprised how many Polish people visit my site and even leave comments in Polish. I love it!
The satisfaction I get just knowing that others appreciate my healthy recipes and are cooking healthy foods and meals at home is all the reward I need. I will never sell anything on this site. My only goal is to motivate more people to cook at home, making good nutrition and healthy eating a priority.
A lot of people may not realize that eating healthy meals doesn’t mean tofu and rice cakes. You don’t have to give up your favorite comfort foods… just change the way you make them. Maybe some day soon, instead of saying, “Aren’t you Jenny Jones, the talk show host?” they will be saying, “Aren’t you Jenny Jones, the healthy home cook? I love your recipes!”

Marble Cake Recipe
I highly recommend following every step as written. Achieving the perfect marble cake recipe from scratch is worth every step in the process, I promise! The eggs and butter should be room temperature, the butter and sugar need to be whisked for a certain period of time, etc. I have made this recipe and skipped certain steps and it almost always resulted in a dense and dry cake.
Eggs are important. Getting a good quality, fresh, and vibrant eggs is key. (You can check your eggs freshness by grabbing 2 cups cold water, then put the egg in the water. If it sinks, it’s good if it floats, it’s too old.)

As you may have already determined, I used the existing yellow cake to make my chocolate cake. Some folks prefer to make a yellow cake and a separate chocolate cake for marble (which is fine!). My method is a *bit* of a time saver and certainly doesn’t lack any flavor.
You can also see above that the crumb of the yellow and chocolate cake is slightly different I love the gentle change in texture and think it enhances the flavor is some weird mind-bending way.
While the marble cake is definitely the star of the show, the chocolate buttercream is definitely a nominee for best supporting role! It is beyond light and fluffy but still manages to have a rich depth of flavor that will have you coming back for more.
The method I used for frosting (rustic, vintage) is really forgiving for households with members who cannot resist stealing a lick of a beautifully frosted cake! (like mine!)
- 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- ½ cup packed brown sugar
- ¼ cup butter
- ½ cup chopped walnuts
- 1 cup white sugar
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ cup shortening
- 2 eggs
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Lightly grease and flour one 13x9 inch cake pan.
Combine 1/2 cup of the flour and the brown sugar, cut in the butter until the mixture is crumbly, stir in the chopped nuts and set aside.
In a double boiler or microwave melt chocolate chips and set aside to cool.
In a large bowl mix the remaining 2 cups flour, white sugar, baking soda, and salt. Add the shortening, eggs, buttermilk, and vanilla. Blend and then beat with an electric mixer at medium speed for 2 minutes.
Combine 1 cup of the batter and the melted cooled chocolate, mix well.
Alternate spooning the light and the dark batters into the prepared 13x9 cake pan. Cut through with a knife to marble. Sprinkle top with the reserved nut mixture.
Bake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for 30 minutes or until cake tests done. Let cake cool and enjoy!

How do you make a marble effect cake?
You will need a 1/4 cup for the vanilla batter and a tablespoon for the chocolate batter.
Use the 1/4 cup to drop the vanilla batter randomly into your pan
Fill any gaps with the chocolate batter using the tablespoon. This is the first layer.
For the next layer, use the 1/4 cup to add more vanilla batter into the pan, only this time, the vanilla batter would be on the chocolate batter of the previous layer.
Use the tablespoon to add chocolate batter on top of the vanilla batter of the previous layer.
Continue adding the vanilla and chocolate batter in this way until all the batter has been used up.
To create the swirl, use a skewer or small knife or even the straight edge of a spoon or fork and run it horizontally inside the batter. Don’t over swirl that the batters become mixed together. Stop once you see the marble pattern form
Your marble loaf cake is ready to be baked.
